Contains Sierra Club records, including Board of Directors meeting minutes, Budget Committee files, Sierra Club Committee on Political Education (SCCOPE) files, and Sierra Club Foundation Board of Trustee meeting minutes. Also includes correspondence and speeches, particularly from the years 1982-1984, while Shaffer was President of the Sierra Club.

Born in Western Pennsylvania in 1931, Denny Shaffer attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in 1952. After serving two years in the United States Air Force he and his wife moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he opened a dry cleaning business. He also became involved in a number of human rights and environmental activities. After joining the Sierra Club in 1968 Shaffer held several leadership positions within the organization. Most notably he was national president of the Sierra Club from 1982-1984. Shaffer passed away on June 23, 2015.
